  Innovation through Serendipity, Error, or Exaptation Serendipity Innovation can happen in many ways. Accidental or serendipitous discovery is one way of innovation. This type of discovery is when that it occurs through luck or by accident (Tidd & Bessant, 2020) . The innovator is looking for one thing and, through the course of that research by chance, discovers a different breakthrough (Tidd & Bessant, 2020) . An excellent example of an accidental breakthrough is Columbus's discovery of the New World. In 1492, Columbus sailed west from Spain (Beecham, 2017, November 18th) . IBM PS/2 IBM introduced the revolutionary personal computer, the IBM PC, in 1981 ("PS/2: the beginning of the end of the IBM PC," 2012) . However, not the first mass-market personal computer; that it was an IBM computer legitimized personal computer usage.
